| Book Review Digest |
Description: Book Review Digest is a reference database that provides review excerpts and book summaries for current English-language fiction and non-fiction books for all ages. Abstracting and indexing are included for more than 112,000 books. This database contains coverage of more than 109 periodicals, with more than 8,000 new records added per year. Full bibliographic information is available for every book covered in the database. Book Review Digest indexes nonfiction books that have received reviews in at least two or more periodicals, and fiction books that have received reviews in at least three different periodicals.

Description: This subscription database is provided through FirstSearch and contains over 4 million records. It describes in-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming fiction and non-fiction books, audio material, and videos from North American publishers and U.S. distributors and wholesalers. Includes over 680,000 full-text book reviews from these sources: Boston Book Review, BIOSIS, Booklist, Bookstore Journal, Choice, Doody's Reviews, ForeWord Reviews, Horn Book Guide, Horn Book Magazine, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Quill & Quire, Reference and Research Book News, SciTech Book News, School Library Journal, University Press Book News and VOYA.

Description: Book Index with Reviews (BIR) is a comprehensive database that provides information on over 3.8 million book titles in a wide range of formats, including large print, books on tape, etc. Fiction and non-fiction titles are included in the database, in all genres. (ALA) |
Description: The ALA is the largest and most inclusive library association in the United States. Under the "Products & Publications" tab of the website, you will find a list of all the periodicals ALA publishes: many have links to online archives. There is also a catalog of ALA publications available for browsing. Each division of the ALA (Association of College & Research Libraries, Public Library Association, Young Adult Library Services Association, etc.) has its own website within www.ala.org with further information, guidelines, and resources. |

Description: The ACRL is a division of the American Library Association that focuses on college and research libraries. This website features its own frequently updated weblog about current topics relevant to academic librarians. Select content from the association’s periodicals College & Research Libraries, College & Research Libraries News, and CHOICE: Current Reviews For Academic Libraries is available under the Publications tab. Job postings that appear in College & Research Library News are also included. |

Description: An organization of 123 research libraries, mostly university-affiliated. Description: IFLA is an international organization of libraries and librarians from 150 countries. A four-volume set which aims for an international scope. Article topics include library associations, types of librarians, knowledge management, databases, and profiles of various libraries in the U.S., as well as the national libraries of selected foreign countries. Articles have lengthy lists of references to aid further research into a particular subject. An online version, updated several times a year, is also available (see list of databases above).
ALA world encyclopedia of library and information services – 2nd ed.
Reference Z1006 .A18 1986
Contains short biographies of major figures in library history, plus articles on: activities of selected library associations; professional education and research; different types of libraries; library systems in 160 different countries; and the practice and principles of librarianship and information management. Although some pieces are outdated, the biographies and articles on library history are still useful.
International encyclopedia of information and library science -- 2nd ed.

Includes lengthy articles on topics such as: organization of knowledge; economics of information; informatics; knowledge industries; and information professions, accompanied by useful bibliographies. Helpful for those researching international librarianship, since it includes articles on libraries in each major region of the world.
Encyclopedia of information science and technology

5 volumes containing over 550 entries that include references and definitions of key terms. The focus is on information technology; mention of its applications in libraries is very limited.
Guide to reference books –- 11 th ed.

This guide lists reference books for large variety of topics. Listings are organized by subject and then sub-categorized by type (encyclopedia, bibliography, etc.). Although it is not up-to-date, it is a valuable resource for librarians and future librarians.
Walford's guide to reference material – 8 th ed.

The British equivalent to the ALA-sponsored Guide to Reference Books (see above). Vol. 1 covers the fields of science and technology; Vol. 2 covers social and historical sciences, philosophy, & religion. Arranged much like the American Guide, it includes key online databases and journal articles as well as books.
American library directory
Reference Z731. A53
A directory of all types of libraries, listed by state and then city/town. At the beginning of each state’s section, statistics are given regarding public libraries and the state population. Individual listings often include some statistical information as well. Vol. 2 has a directory of libraries in Canada, and lists of cooperative library organizations, library agencies, libraries for the handicapped, library systems, and library training programs.
