Computing Resource Repository

The Computing Resource Repository is a division of Arxiv.org and publishes, organizes, and provides searchable access to full text articles about various topics within the computing field.  Arxiv.org, sponsored by Cornell University, is offers open access to information in many areas of mathematics, physics, computer science, quantitative biology, and statistics.  Topics are broken down into broad categories with links to follow and also has a search tool to provide searching and browsing by subject area.

Published by the National Science Foundation, this site provides information about computer and information science discoveries, news, awards, and funding.  The National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that promotes the advance of science and engineering.  Links are provided to free downloadable articles about organizations, projects, grant submissions, and awards in the areas of computer science and engineering.

 

LANL Research Library

This site, maintained by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, provides links to key resources, dictionaries, encyclopedias, databases, news, conferences and meetings, bibliographic information, and websites for tutorials, software support, and professional organizations.  Los Alamos National Laboratory does research related to national security and delivers scientific and engineering solutions to many of the nations most critical problems.  Areas of specialization include strategic science and national security.

 

Java Technology

The Sun Developer Network provides development tools, free sample code, downloads, and communities to learn and problem solve with Java and other open source software products.  Although registration is required, many of the resources including tutorials, user groups, software and updates are free.

 

Linux Online!

This is the official website for the open source Unix-like operating system, Linux.  Available here is a kernel version of Linux, with basic services and device drivers, an entry level tutorial called Linux 101, news, reviews and the latest information about Linux and other open source software.  The site provides links to applications, documentation, distributions, courses, vendors, hardware, projects, events, user groups and more.  It is possible to register and subscribe, however it is not required to access the information on the site.

 

MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

MIT CSAIL provides access to technical reports, research abstracts, work products, historical collections, and computer science resources.  As of December 2007, these resources were not searchable, however development of a search tool was underway.  CSAIL divides research into three main areas-Artificial Intelligence, Systems, and Theory and projects are mainly performed by faculty with the assistance of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research staff.  These projects are sponsored by U.S. government agencies, international corporations, and other organizations.

As the title suggests, this resource provides valuable information about the pre-millenial history of the world of computing.  The encyclopedia provides brief articles about computer topics, the history of computers, and people who have made contributions to the world of computing.  Illustrations in black and white include photographs, tables, charts, and diagrams. 

 

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology - 10th ed. / Mark D. Licker, Publisher

Updated in 2007, this encyclopedia provides very brief articles about various topics within the field of science and technology with recent updates to several topics in the computer science field.  Includes an extensive collection of color illustrations.

 

Webster's New World Computer Dictionary - 10th ed / Bryan Pfaffenberger

This dictionary provides definitions and background information for more than 4,750 computer terms, abbreviations, and acronyms. Coverage includes protocols in storage, memory, and peripherals, computer security, legislation, and computer and Internet technology.  Offers flip and find access to terms related to topics as varied as e-mail applications to upgrading and repairing hardware.
