 This searchable site offers a collection of web links to resources in anthropology, ethnomusicology, folklore, and folklife compiled by the Library of Congress It includes images, sounds (recordings and music), and written accounts. It also provides information about the center's programs, events, and internship opportunities, as well as links to ethnographic resources.

 

 

 

AnthroBase

This site offers a searchable database of anthropological texts with a social and cultural concentration. Especially useful is the online Dictionary of Anthropology. This is a multilingual open source site founded in 2001by two anthropologists based in Oslo, Norway.

AnthroSource

 

 

Developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), this site brings 100 years of anthropological material online to scholars and the public including primary literature in the field, full text AAA journals (American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, Anthropology and Education Quarterly, Medical Anthropology Quarterly) and archives. It is full text searchable and provides cross-references to other articles.  This was an outstanding title in the CHOICE 2005 supplement.

Maintained by the Texas A&M Anthropology Department, this site provides links to recent news stories published on the Internet by such sources as ABC, BBC, CNN, Discovery, and National Geographic News, organized by broad topic (breaking news, archaeology, bioanthropology, social/cultural, lingustics). It offers news archives and a search bar. Some services require that you register and select a password in order to retrieve articles but none charge a fee to retrieve these news stories. The validity of the links depend on the news agencies.

This site, made available by the American Anthropological Association, offers links to anthropology-related Internet sites worldwide. It includes an extensive list of organizations, institutes and discussion groups. It also contains information on AAA programs, job listings, links to related resources, and more. 

 

 

 

 

Anthropology Tutorials

This site offers lessons on various topics in cultural and physical anthropology such as language and culture, kinship, sex and marriage, ethnicity and race, economic systems, kinship, subsistence, religion, and evolution. It includes glossaries, practice quizzes, and lists of related links. Created and Maintained by Dr. Dennis O'Neil of the Behavioral Sciences Department at PalomarCollege, San Marcos, California. 

 

 

 

National Anthropological Archives Smithsonian Institution

This site links to carefully slected web sites in the field, focusing on ethnography and anthropology.   The NAA collects and preserves historical and contemporary materials that document the world's cultures and the history of anthropology.

 

 

 

Social Science Research Network

The Social Science Research Network is a searchable online clearinghouse for current social science research. This not-for-profit company, founded in 1994 by a group of esteemed scholar-investors, has posted more than 131,000 papers. The SSRN offers some subscription based services and features but access to research papers is free.

Encyclopedia of American Folklife / Bronner, Simon J.

The four volumes contain essays arranged alphabetically ranging from broad (such as family) to specific (such as hip hop). The entries are signed by contributing authors; many include “see also” references, illustrations and additional sources. Each volume contains the general, cultural group, and geographical indexes, an A-Z topic finder that lists entry names under broader subject categories and its own Table of Contents.. The fourth volume includes a 79-page bibliography of all published sources.

This fifteen volume source includes 3,300 signed articles with bibliographies. The final volume includes a cumulative index and synoptic outline.

This work provides a historical overview of domestic, economic, intellectual, material, political, recreational and religious life. The six volumes are chronological, from ancient to modern times, and share a cumulative index. Primary sources are referenced. 
 
International encyclopedia of marriage and family / Ponzetti, James J., editor

This four volume edition surveys family life from a multicultural and interdisciplinary perspective. The 300-plus authoritative, signed entries are arranged alphabetically and include useful cross-references and detailed bibliographies. The reference is international in scope, including 50 countries (however, more data is included for western industrialized countries). Some entries include charts, diagrams, tables or black-and-white captioned photographs. A comprehensive 100-page index is included in the fourth volume.
 
Marriage customs of the world: from henna to honeymoons / Monger, George

This work reviews traditions relating to marriage across world cultures. Over 200 entries are alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced and include references. The entries are well researched and accessible. 
 
Men and masculinities: a social, cultural, and historical encyclopedia / Kimmel, Michael and Aronson, Amy, editors

This two volume set contains 400 entries with bibliographies. They look at individuals, historical events, cultural symbols and well-known artwork as reflections of the notion of masculinity. Though some of the contributions come from abroad, the focus is pretty firmly on the US. The two volumes are paged together and share a comprehensive index.
 
Traditional Festivals: a multicultural encyclopedia / Christian Roy

This two volume work includes articles alphabetically arranged and cross referenced. An index and table of contents allow for ease of access. Appendices provide festival dates and calendars.

This second edition collects thirty-eight representative essays in cultural studies as a means to introduction to the field, each with a contextual preface and suggestions for further reading. The introduction by the author, a professor of English at the University of Melbourne, provides a history and discussion of key concerns in the field. Includes a bibliography and index.
